Amahoro Africa 2010: Christ, Creation & Community
About 160 leaders from across Africa and the world are gathered in Mombasa, Kenya for Amahoro Africa: The Gathering. The heart of Amahoro, which means "peace" is an environment where conversation can happen to be part of transformation on the continent of Africa.
The conversation at Amahoro 2010 is centered on "Christ, Creation and Community."
Why Amahoro?
On Tuesday, during one of the conference tracks, Claude Nikondeha shared why Amahoro was birthed. It came out of his quest to find other Africans who believed there had to be something more than a Gospel that taught: "Repent, because Jesus is coming soon." Growing up in the church in Burundi, it became increasingly hard for Claude to believe in good news that was only for a life to come without piercing the circumstances he saw everywhere around him. "The problem with focusing on heaven was that people were still here where all the problems are," says Claude.
"If the Gospel is about living for a better place, but if you don't leave, it stops being good news." The problem was, so many of pastors and Christian leaders' thinking were shaped by this message.
After his studies in France and the United States, Claude returned to Africa to see if he could find others like him, who believed in a Gospel that included more than an evacuation plan. He was looking for others who embraced God's plan for transformation. Even though he found several, what he heard from all of them was they felt alone in their work. That's when the idea of Amahoro: The Gathering began to take shape. This year's conference in Kenya is the fourth Amahoro Africa Gathering.
Now his work with Amahoro is to help rethink the Theology from which he and other leaders have been shaped. "Amahoro is a space where Africans can find their voice and their theology," Claude added.
